Course Code: CI 24/1
This exceptional course offers full UK, Regional and EU training for the civil, commercial, and community mediator - as well as a solid foundation to all other forms of mediation. The Society is delighted to present this live in Grand Cayman with the same London Faculty as is world renowned part of our outreach programme for 2024 to 2026.
** This is the tenth time the Society has been invited to lead an educational opportunity and seminar locally and the programme over the last 12 years is a universally acclaimed success. Feedback from other courses internationally this year, including South Afrtica and Greece: "A brilliant week - life changing professionally and wonderful socially. This should be compulsory medicine for all professionals!" and "Simply the best course I have ever been one. 10/10". "Brilliant reaining from London's best faculty - fully recommended for lawyers, financial people, and community leaders."**
This is not surprising. Course feedback for over 20 years is legendary and the same tutors and Faculty are working around the world. For 2024 only - the cost of the course is supported by the Bould Foundation and the hosts reducing it to just £1150/CI$1200. This is because as a Charity we do not take a profit - we just fund our costs and our charitable activities in the UK such as the Free Mediation Project and our international outreach in southern Africa. Our educational activities are also VAT-exempt (zero-rated) so this offers an additional saving.
It is open to all. You are welcome from the Cayman Islands, the region or indeed mainland USA or the United Kingdom. Flights can be purchased at reasonable costs, direct or via New York, or Chicago. Accommodation in pleasant appartments is around £1,000 for a week. The location is central to George Town and Seven Mile beach so a car is not needed.
Who is this for?
This mediation foundation course is for everyone. You need have no legal or degree background. It is taught in English, by experienced practising mediators, supported by tutors who speak other languages and are from diverse backgrounds.
The course represents the first major step towards qualification as a Civil and Commercial Mediator and is accredited by the Civil Mediation Council, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and the Bar Council, amongst others. It is recognised worldwide. Practice in the United Kingdom will require three observations to obtain SOM accreditation - we provide these online free of charge. Practice in the CI does not require this - and the life skills that the course offers are tremendous.
Delegates will undertake both theory and practical elements during this intensive, week-long course and will be required to undergo both an assessed simulated mediation and written examination. The course hours in Grand Cayman are adjusted to allow afternoon private study, office catch-up, and reflection as required.
This course is suitable for anyone who has an interest in learning more about advanced negotiation, deep listening, and of course working as a mediator or a mediation advocate - whether they intend to practice as a mediator themselves or simply use the skills learned within their own existing roles. No previous knowledge or understanding of alternative dispute resolution or the law is required as all essential elements will be covered on the course.
The course is especially useful for those working in customer or client or community facing roles who need to reduce tensions, improve relationships, and build durable solutions through the use of principled negotiation and advanced deep listening skills.

This course was engaging, excellently delivered and thoroughly enjoyable! I would recommend this to lawyers and non-lawyers alike. The skills that you will learn on the course will be beneficial in various aspects of life, irrespective of whether or not you want to practise as a mediator afterwards!

"An intensive, comprehensive and action packed course which allowed me to see beyond the theory to putting it into practice. It is one thing to read about a field of practice and quite another to try and do it yourself!"

‘The Society of Mediators course will both change your life and the way you look at resolving any dispute in the future. I was already a convert to mediation, having been continually frustrated by the court process, in my practice as a solicitor. However, the course gave me a completely fresh outlook in the way to deal with mediation, and is designed to fast-track you to have the skills, you may have thought you had, but didn’t realise you need. The week is intense, but in a good way, and planned so that you often don’t really realise you are continually learning. There is a rich blend of tutors and facilitators, who have a very wide range of backgrounds. It may sound over the top, but by day one I was completely re-thinking the way I approached problems, and indeed the way I communicated with people. Whether you are a lawyer or not, this course has something to offer anyone who wants to resolve issues in any walk of life. In fact, I found my legal background, something of a disadvantage, as I had to be ‘untrained’ in lots of ways I approach disputes. Most importantly of all, I learnt to listen and not talk! To say it is ‘value for money’ is an understatement. I urge you to sign up. You will not regret it.’ Ben Tisdall, Solicitor. www.bentisdallsolicitor.com

I know it has been over a month since we completed the course, but the more I reflect upon those 5 days, the more I realise their immense impact. This has been the most stimulating course I have done in over 3 years, and for that I cannot thank you enough. I just wanted to thank you for the time, and effort you and your lovely team put into the structure and content of the course. The skills you passed on were simply life-altering. This introduction to the world of mediation has greatly deepened my passion for ADR, and I am extremely excited to go further with this. I am looking forward to the next steps, and to hopefully learning more from you in the future.
