This two-day course held in person, covers both the theoretical and practical elements required for accreditation as a specialist SEND mediator, by the Civil Mediation Council (CMC), for delegates who already hold accreditation as Civil and Commercial Mediators. This course leads to registration on the CMC SEND Mediator Register. The course attracts 12 hours CPD and successful completion will satisfy the requirements of the Civil Mediation Council for registration as a SEND Mediator. Over 60% of all statutory SEND disagreements proceed to mediation or an alternative form of dispute resolution Once accredited, delegates will have the skills, knowledge and expertise to chair some of the 4000+ mediations which take place annually.

  2.  Language and Definitions.
  3.  Relevant Legislation.
  4.  The Role of Professionals.
  5.  The Graduated Approach - How SEND support is structured and provided.
  6.  Reasonable Adjustments.
  7.  Education, Health and Care Plane (EHCP).
  8.  Preparing for Mediation - Facilitating information and clarifying agendas.
  9.  CYP Participation 'The Voice of the Child'.
  10.  Power Balancing in SEND Mediation.
Day 2: SEND Mediation.
  1.  Managing Multi-Party Meetings.
  2.  Working with Advocates.
  3.  Parental Responsibility.
  4.  Authority to Settle in SEND. 
  5.  Agreements Writing in SEND context.
  6.  SEND Tribunal.
  7.  How the Mediation Provider works as an Organisation.
  8.  Local Offer.
  9.  Self-Reflection.

Who is this for?

This course, held in person, is intended for those delegates that have already achieved accreditation as a Civil & Commercial Mediator and who wish to make the specialist area of SEND mediation part of their offering.

There is no prerequisite for delegates to have had experience in either education, SEND 0-25 roles or in SEND Law. It is essential however that delegates have a genuine interest in people and supporting all participants to achieve the right outcome for children and young people.
